The Pomfret Mosaic is a venture into the diverse community that is Pomfret. Diversity has always been an issue that every school community deals with. Mr. Richards set the tone for Pomfret with his very first chapel speech of the 2013-2014 school year. In his chapel speech, Mr. Richards stressed the need for every person in the Pomfret community to feel like a host and not a guest. The mosaic was created to give students an opportunity to create an environment where every student feels like a host. Furthermore the mosaic was designed to navigate the affects of socioeconomic status, racism, ableism, gender, sexual orientation, and ageism in the Pomfret community. Through the Pomfret Mosaic, we are learning to recognize and appreciate the differences between us all, while also becoming an inclusive community by celebrating all these different opinions that make up Pomfret. The mosaic is only the beginning of an ongoing endeavor to diversify a school with a great community.

Pomfret School Diversity Statement –
At Pomfret, we believe diversity is who we are. Diversity refers to those differences in identity that impact our social experiences, including status and access to resources. Most obviously, it is determined by race, gender, and culture. On a more subtle level, it includes class, sexual orientation, religion, ability, and appearance.
We are guided by research which indicates academic excellence and a diverse learning environment are synergistically linked and that students in diverse classroom settings show growth in intellectual development, maturity, motivation, and academic skills.
